"Something's Up" In America's Big Berg
featuring
Selected Poems from The Alaska Mystery Collection
and The Tree Series

April 22, 2015. I did have a CONversation with an FBI guy, about six months ago, and he was too busy with his phone to listen to what I was saying. I knew it was a waste of my time to drive to their offices, but I learned much, and every day is another day that you and I have, and Cindy doesn't.
Sept. 5, 2013.
Jan. 13, 2013. Another upswing in traffic to this particular webpage from several places around the country, which is noteworthy. Stating the obvious, I think Somebody might want to crack a JDHS yearbook from 1978-1980, and perhaps one might find more than one person who resembles the sketch of a suspect below.
December 20, 2012. There are a several IP addresses that visit this section regularly. It appears that you are not finding what you are looking for, so do feel free to email me.

May 8, 2012. There has been a flurry of hits to this section of the site since about 1:00 pm on May 7. Perhaps there was some mention of Cindy in the Alaska news? There must have been something read or said somewhere for so many folks to be googling her name.
Update: July 5, 2011. The Google link for the ADN news article below is still not working. It appears that Google has pulled down that article; how very strange. I don't believe in coincidences, and that's exactly why I took the screen shot when I first found that article the other day, and it was gone minutes later!!
Man! How Psychic was that? As if I somehow "knew" that the article would suddenly "disappear" from their site?
Questions or comments? Paula@frozenfiefdom.com
Update: July 3, 2011. With the recent surge in interest by folks in the Big Berg, a few other states, and even a foreign country or two; I've done a bit of digging round, and found this article from The Anchorage Daily News, October 4, 1983, which features a composite drawing of a possible suspect.

Screen shot of the article and drawing, in case the link isn't working.

UPDATE: November 12, 2010. A few folks have contacted me with additional questions and their take on things, and information. One has apparently passed theirs on to JPD/AST and we can all expect some renewed interest by law enforcement, correct?
Another person who contacted me with their story; seemed too planned out, and more like a built to suit scenario; as I've encountered from others, CONveniently named herself as "Cindy".
When I smell Dead Fish, it's a snow job, etc. Some do know what I'm talkin' 'bout. My family and "former friends" do know I've always had some very keen and well honed senses...

UPDATE: April 13, 2010. On a Google search this AM, I found this Anchorage Daily News article dated April 29, 1984. It mentions a suspect named Dean Phillip Carter, who was also under suspicion for FIVE murders in California, and another rape and attempted murder in Arizona. It appears that they were wrong about him killing Cindy, as the physical evidence collected should have been adequate to link the actual killer to the scene. I still think the partial, previous article I have below, which mentions a person with light hair, is more likely to be the killer.
For such a quiet little fiefdom in the great big berg, there shor nuf do be much a goin' on. Many folks around the country (based on my log file activity), will be mighty pleased to see if AST ever gets a grip on this cold case. It's their job, isn't it?
Or, could it possibly be true, as someone said to me, "Maybe they do know who did it, and cut a deal."
Wow. I thought things like that only happened in the movies! What say you?

UPDATE: September 3, 2009. It's been just over 26 years since Cindy Elrod was murdered in Juneau, Alaska. There are still a large number of folks who are interested in her killer being found. If anyone has clippings, articles, comments, or other information, please email me at: paula@frozenfiefdom.com
Below is a partial article I found a few months ago, which was apparently published in a newspaper back in 1983.
"...sandy blonde hair was seen with Cynthia Elrod at the Landing Strip bar in Juneau early on Aug. 20. Ms Elrod's partly clad body was found by a friend in her..."

I was having a quick scan of my inbox and found this email series below. I've included it as it mentions Cindy Elrod, who was a former roommate of mine who was murdered (still unsolved, as far as I know) in Juneau approximately 25 years ago. (She, another Juneau girl, and I had shared a mobile home in Juneau for a few months approx. 2 years before.) No, I don't know who killed her. Yes, I was questioned by the Alaska State Troopers. Yes, like most events which took place in that Berg, there is much more to the story. And how's this for "coincidental?" I was standing on her doorstep the summer evening that she was murdered, as she and I had planned to meet, as I was moving into her home the next day.
The Troopers who interviewed me knew that bit of information before I voluntarily shared that information with them. And when I asked how they knew that particular detail, they chose to not answer fully, or to my satisfaction. Another person was with me, waiting in a vehicle, when I knocked on her door, but she didn't answer, and we eventually drove away. The Troopers were also aware of that.
And I don't recall if any of the gruesome particulars and methods of her killing were made public, but someone I know said that he saw photos of the scene, and described them to me later.
Those who "interviewed / interrogated" me in June of 2007, also asked me about my knowledge of that case, and I gave them the name of the person who described the photos to me. He was not the person who was with me the night that she was murdered, but he is someone that the two women who were sharing the veiled "Girl's Night Out" in June of 2007, know intimately. And those two woman also heard many other details that I shared with AST at a later date, but will not disclose at this time.
It might be time for someone to have another looksee and perhaps interview those Alaska State Troopers who originally interviewed me. And I would assume that my interview was recorded, so I'll be sending a request to AST today, and see what sort of reply I receive.
A quick internet search brought up only this information on Cindy Elrod's murder. It was such a shocker back then, I expected to find much more information online.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the geographic location of Juneau; it is an isolated community; no roads out of the area, and one must either fly, or take a boat to leave. Based on the time of day (I believe that her killer was inside the home while I was standing on the stairs, but I didn't know it at that time), people knowing my whereabouts back then, down to the minute; the fact that it remains unsolved doesn't add up. Perhaps some renewed interest in this case will provide some new clues. It appears to me, based on the questions that I was asked in June of 2007, that "Nobody" does have a very good idea of Who Killed Cindy Elrod. And it certainly doesn't sound like a random murder by some wandering wacko drifting through the Big Berg.

Hhhmmmm, that's an interesting interpretation. Do you mean Booze Palaces, or jails? I've seen at least 600 shopping carts in a variety of locations in the last few months. "Sprouting up like Mushrooms!!!" to quote Grammy. Back roads of Stayton, OR included. Empty, without anyone around, remaining in the same place for days, or longer. Homeless people cherish them, so it's unlikely they have switched modes of transport for their treasures.
Another clue in the pile of 'doo. "Who stepped in dog shi_???" Yep, that line is mine!!!
Anna? Your input? You've been so quiet, do we need to file a Missing Persons report on you??
Dad said he still has your pistol, he showed me his .38 revolver. Looked a lot like the one I used to have that Gramps bought for me after Cindy Elrod was murdered. Could be, being as Butch exchanged my ..38 for a different pistol. Dad brought it into the bedroom I was staying in, was very casual in the handling of it, dropped a bullet or 2 on the floor as he unloaded then reloaded it, and displayed an awesome lack of handgun safety. He would have shown me yours, but I passed on that. With that lack of respect for a loaded weapon, you might want to consider having him ship yours to you before he fires it accidently during some other show and tell session and "hurts somebody!!" (Doesn't that sound familiar?) Speaking of, anyone heard from Mom?
And for Val, get this. Dad again came into the bedroom holding a plastic key chain with your name on it. Like the kind you can buy at Walmart for a child. He said that he had purchased the Jeep from Clyde in No. Dak. and was planning to give it to you when you graduated from college. But since he sold it, he wanted me to give you the empty key ring. I suggested that he send it to you himself. Wasn't it when you were there a couple years ago Mark, that he bought that Jeep? Who in the hell buys a vehicle with the intention of giving it away in another 4 plus years?? In our Family, only GAIL gets a car. Ahh, well. If my book sells as planned, we'll all be able to have brand new rides!!
You skipped answering the Rev. questions, Gail. Might be profitable for me to sign up for one. Please send the name, address, etc. of that Church you represent, perhaps they will extend "family favors" and ordain me without uttering a prayer!!!
And yes, everyone will receive full credits in the Acknowledgment section of my book(s). This much entertainent and comedy is an unbeatable combination.

It's so quiet from the East Coast side of The Family.
Gail, here's an I Spy clue for your "keen eye" to deduce. What's the symbolism of using a shopping cart in a setup? Or actually, Anna would be the one to know, being a former investigator.
Speaking of church, the Catholics are back full roar in the news with scandal. Isn't it something, 6 out of 7 of us don't attend. Grammy had it right, priests should be allowed to marry. Dad still doesn't agree with that issue (I mentioned it might not be a bad idea), and he still attends.
Val still has not been baptized, and yes, he did ask. The way I see it, Baptism is a ceremony with a certificate, not a Blessing from GOD. But it is a major production, and fully endorsed as a necessary ritual by groups with bloodstained hands; including the Church itself.
Reverend? Your take? Which Church issued your collar, and does being a Rev. give you the Nonprofit status on your tax returns?
Sheeeeet. (Only Jay can say that with the correct emphasis!) I had to spell check all the religious words, had them all misspelled. Wonder why...
